Women were important to men for them to function. In this section, we are able to see the five men cheer-up even after seeing Dracula escape becuase of Mina. It is through Mina's bright and cheerful mind that every moment goes on withoutfalling fown all the time. "With sad hearts we came back to my house, wehre we found Mrs. Harker waiting us, with an appearance of cheerfulness which did honour to herbravery and unselfishness." (Mina, pg 268) If it wasn't for Mina the men probably would have been down for a while, but since the one who is actually in most painis smiling and telling them it is okay, the rest are able to keep their simle. I think that in this section of the book, woman's role, Mina's role, is very huge since she is the one who let the book function smoothly in these chapters.
Critical Passage:
"There are here some who would stand between you and death. You must not die. You must not die by any hand; but at least of all by your own. Untill the other, who had ofoulded your sweet life, is true dead you must not die; for if he is still with the quick Un-dead, your death would make you even as he is. No, you must live!" (Van Helsing, pg 254) This is a critical passage since it showed how important Mina was to the five men andto prove that the five men and Mina will not lose to Dracula. I think when Van Helsing was saying this, he wanted to point out that they, five men, cannot go on without her and she is very special to them and that no one will kill Mina or hurt her. In the second part of the passage, we can see that Van Helsing is mentioning about how Lucy was Un-dead like Dracula since she died, and he doesn't wnat that to happen to Mina. The only way to not turn into an Un-dead is noy dying and keep surviving.
Literary Device:
Forshadow:
"So I said farewell to Mina, a parting which neither of us shall forget to our dying day; and we set out." (Jonathan, 259) This showed how Jonathan is ready for everything to happen meaning letting Mina go, when the time comes. This quote also got me to be angry thinking that Mina might die after all those hard work and it got me to think about other opptions of the endings. This forshadowing would be Stroker's way to show the reader how the ending might be or might turn the story around. So it is making the readers to think about how the story will continue and how it will end.
Metaphor: “I could almost hear the beating of my own heart; and the blood surging through my temple sounded like blows from a hammer.” (Seward, page 243)
This showed how Stroker uses lots of literary devices, in this case a metaphor. This part is when Seward describes how he felt while he was waiting to see if Renfield could recover, which can't be whathe is actually feeling for it is impossible. This showed the readers how intense and up tight Seward was when he was waiting in the moment of silence for seomthing to happen.
Reflection: I think our discussion was a success. Our activity was enjoyable since it tested every individual's knowledge not only one person's from the group. I believed that we have distributed the teams equally but apparently one team was stronger than others, so they received most of the points. I believe that is the reason why others were asking for more points per question and it actually got more people to be involved. I think we could have improved out activity by having harder questions since at most cases many people knew the answers to the question. Also I should have prepared a final jeopardy question, and thanks to Mr. Stephens I was able to manage the final jeopardy easily. In out drawing activity, it was very different than what others have prepared so I think that classmates enjoyed it. It gave them a better knowledge of one of the main theme in this book, which was revenge. I think that out activity brought a better knowledge to others and that everyone has enjoyed out activity. Overall I think that our discussion was a success which helped other to gain better knowledge of the section.
